Riot police attack Occupy Melbourne

On 21 October Occupy Melbourne protest camp in the centre of Melbourne was attacked by 400 riot police who destroyed all tents and equipment. During the eight hours of protest which followed more than 100 protesters were arrested and some injured.  Occupy Melbourne [Twitter: #OccupyMelbourne] was established in solidarity with Occupy Wall Street [Twitter: #ows]. Both protests and hundreds like them around the world are ongoing public discussions and protests against the effects of the capitalist crisis on the majority of the world. Protests have been connecting with workers demands. The police attack blocked a union rally against the policies of corporations. The police slowly forced the protesters away from the city centre towards Trades Hall, historic home of the unions in Melbourne. Riot police surrounded Trades Hall while the protesters held meetings inside. More protests are planned. We thank the many comrades around the world who sent us solidarity messages, particularly Occupy Lahore in Pakistan, the Maruti Suzuki workers in Gurgaon India and the GRSE union shipyard workers in Kolkata India, who sent us messages while in the middle of their struggle.
