Pakistani power loom workers fight for wages on multiple fronts

Thousands of power loom workers in the regional city of Toba Tek Singh in Punjab province took to the streets in a recent show of anger against unpaid wages. In a separate dispute, 24 workers were recently sacked by the FKN Textile company so it could replace them with cheaper casualised workers. As in many other countries, this sector is characterised by sub contracting arrangements, piece rate work, and precarious employment conditions. In addition, Pakistani workers also have to endure forced stoppages due to Palkistan’s inadequate electricity supplies. Powerloom workers have a history of taking industrial action.
