Syrian workers resist attacks by government militias

Under increasing pressure, the Syrian government is resorting to more desperate tactics to defeat the popular uprising. With many of its soldiers refusing to fire on protesters, and deserting in increasing numbers, the Syrian government is now using paramilitary forces. These militias are trying to create sectarian divisions between Alawites, Sunni, Shiites, Christians and Kurds by targeting people on ethnic and religious basis.

The industrial city of Homs has become a focus for this tactic as the government tries to divide and weaken workers in this crucial industrial city. All over Syria, workers and their communities are resisting this offensive and continue to organise across ethnic and religious lines.

It is imperative for workers unity to be maintained. Workers need to take control of the economic base of the country so that they can re-distribute the wealth and work for the benefit of all. We are strong if we are united. We are strong if we help each other internationally. Take action to support our Syrian brothers and sisters.

The Local Coordinating Committees of Syria have established a media centre to provide timely and accurate information about the Syrian uprising.
