Migrant worker in Australia wins big payout after being kept as a ‘slave’

In a judgement handed out this week, an Australian Judge ordered a restaurant who had employed an Indian cook, to pay almost AUS $200,000 in back pay. The cook, Dulo Ram, had been sponsored to Australia under its 457 skilled worker visa system. The judge found that Ram had been kept virtually as a slave with 12 hour long work days. This is not the first case of such exploitation of migrant workers in Australia, with unions fighting hard to protect these workers’ wages and conditions, click here and here for recent cases.
