Miners in Pakistan on strike for better pay and conditions

Around 400 workers at the copper and other metals Duddar mines in Balochistan have been on strike since mid April in protest against their appalling work conditions. The majority of the workers are from the local Jamote tribe. Reports indicate that there are few if any safety measures of any kind at the work place, while workers routinely work 12 to 14 hour days for a wage of US $2.00/day. In response, the company has mobilised the local police force to intimidate the workers and break the strike.
