Workers employ General Strike weapon in Syria

The cities of Homs and Hamah again saw general strikes on the 7th of July. Large demonstrations in other cities are also continuing. The popular movement is now organising neighbourhood defense committees to stop the repression from the military and pro-government militias.

The Baath government headed by President Bashar al Assad is being weakened daily by the economic impact of these mobilisations and strikes. The time has come for workers in the major industrial cities of Damascus, Aleppo, Homs, Hamah and Latakia to take the next decisive step and occupy their workplaces. Large scale occupations of worksites, especially strategic oil, gas and manufacturing plants, will fatally cripple the government.

Workers in neighbouring countries can speed up this process by taking international industrial action in support of our Syrian brothers and sisters.

Together we are strong. Together we can win. Workers change the world.

The Local Coordinating Committees of Syria have established a media center to provide timely and accurate information about the Syrian uprising. Their website is here.
