During the month of May, the Australian government has given some of the richest mining companies in the world the right to apply to bring more temporary guest workers to Australia on temporary work visas (457 visas). This arrangement will place these contract workers in an extremely vulnerable position in terms of their employment conditions.

Companies use these schemes to underpay workers and weaken worker solidarity. We have seen this before, click here, here and here. Workers brought into Australia need to have the right to permanent residency, be paid according to the prevailing collective agreements in that industry, and for access to, and, the right to join unions.
