Unions in Australia call for Somyot's release

Respected Thai labour activist Somyot has been in jail since 30 Aril. He has now been denied bail and he is remanded in Bangkok prison until January 2012. He is charged under the Lèse Majesté law which bans any criticism of the King. This law has been used to repress activists in Thailand many times.

The Victorian Trades Hall Council, meeting in Melbourne on 23 September, endorsed a resolution requesting Somyot’s release and condemning the use of oppressive laws to restrict workers from speaking out. The resolution states: VTHC Executive Council supports the release from detention of Somyot Pruksakasemsuk. VTHC supports a workers right to organise and to speak out against injustice. The VTHC calls on the Government of Thailand to reform oppressive laws that prohibit labour activists from organising and campaigning for workers rights. The VTHC supports the release of labour activists who have been arrested for standing up with workers.
