South Korean truckers to strike

KPTU Cargo Truckers Solidarity Division has declared a general strike beginning Monday 25 June. The truckers strike of 2008 cost the South Korean government $6.57 billion dollars in trade. At that time, the South Korean government agreed to a standard freight rates system that would provide workers with a decent income and therefore stop workers driving for dangerously long hours. But the government has refused to keep its promise or negotiate with the cargo truckers. The union is demanding the implementation of a standardized rates system, an increase in freight rates by 30%, coverage for industrial accidents and unionization rights.
