Migrant worker in Saudi Arabia killed amid new crackdown

An Ethiopian migrant worker was killed by Saudi Arabian police amid a sweeping round up of ‘illegal’ migrant workers in Saudi Arabia. Saudi Arabia had welcomed millions of migrant workers from all around the world in previous years to work mainly as domestics, labourers or in the construction industry for long hours and low wages. Now that the economic crisis is impacting on its economy, the Saudi government is finding all kinds of legal irregularities to expel many of these workers. As trade unions were banned, these workers have very little recourse to justice and are extremely vulnerable to victimisation
