Hongik University, a private university in the Mapo-gu district of central Seoul, is claiming massive damages from cleaning workers who recently went on strike.
The workers began their sit-in protest because of mass layoffs and excessively poor working conditions. The workers won an eight-hour workday at 4,450 won ($4.18) per hour and cancellation of the layoff plans.
The university filed a suit against six cleaners and their union, demanding more than a quarter of a million dollars in compensation. The university claims the sit-in caused significant damage to the school – not only its property but also its image.
But it seems their anti-worker attitude is doing their image no good at all. The Korea Times reports that message boards of major Korean-language portals and other social networking websites were bombarded with messages denouncing the suit against the cleaners. Read more background here and here.
