Country-wide strike by teachers challenges Afghanistan’s government

Afghanistan is a country that has been engulfed in war for the last 35 years and where workers face incredible dangers. Notwithstanding this history, since the start of June thousands of high school teachers have been on strike in a co-ordinated campaign across the country led by the Teachers National Council. The teachers’ main demands are for better pay, less unpaid overtime, better career structure, and distribution of land for teachers to build houses. The teachers are facing a repressive and autocratic government dominated by warlords.
