Burmese and Bengali boat people part of a regional exploitation system

While some of the thousands of Burmese and Bengali boat people have been allowed to land in Malaysia and Indonesia, there are still many others thought to be stuck on boats in the high seas. This crisis has forced both the Thai and the Malaysian governments to investigate the large scale smuggling of migrant workers across their countries. Evidence of widespread murder, racketeering and torture is being uncovered. Most of this human commerce is based on providing unorganised and cheap labour to Thailand, Malaysia and Singapore.
