Taiwanese workers win compensation after a 20 year battle

In what is seen as a landmark case in Taiwan, a court has ordered the US company, RCA Corporations, to pay US $18 million in damages for the death of over 200 workers. The factory was an electronics plant that used large amounts of volatile organic compounds in its processing. Due to poor Occupational Health and Safety regulations, these chemicals not only poisoned the workers but have also continued to poison the local community for the last 25 years since the closure of the factory. While the amount ordered to be paid was much less than what the families were looking for, it is still an important precedent in Taiwan, and some reward for the workers and activists who have campaigned for justice for so long.
