Sri Lanka: Media suppression – website offices set ablaze

In the early morning of 31 January, 2011 the Lanka eNews offices were set on fire by a group of unidentified individuals. Consequently, the main offices of the website, comprising the computer hall and the library, have been completely destroyed. It has become very clear that the fire was created by the use of fuel – petrol. The arsonists broke open the front door and entered the premises to commit the crime.

A protest was staged by media organizations, political unions and civil organizations at noon on 1 February, 2011 at the Lipton Circus against the arson attack. The demonstration lasted for over an hour. The protestors, carrying placards, shouted slogans "the latest victim of media suppression is Lanka eNews" and "we will rise from the ashes and even from the charred coal".
