Refugee activists in Australia prepare for national rallies

Since the election of a new right wing government in Australia late last year, the situation for asylum seekers has gone from terrible to disastrous. The Government has militarised the northern border of the country, has clamped down on almost any reporting on the issue, and has made it illegal for people to claim asylum in Australia. For any asylum seekers that manage to avoid the ‘tow back’ to Indonesia, the concentration camps of Nauru and Manus Island await them. Major rallies against these policies will be held around Australia on Sunday the 13th of April.

At the end of March in Malaysia, Dr. Irene Fernandez passed away after a short illness. Irene was a lifelong fighter for the rights of migrant workers in Malaysia and was active in many other regional groups. We salute her courage and efforts. She will be remembered.
