Last year’s Indonesian mine deaths were no accident

Last year, in a major industrial accident, 28 workers died at the Freeport-McMoran Grasberg copper mine in West Papua, Indonesia. An investigation into the accident has been held, and the Indonesian National Human Rights Commission (Komnas HAM) has stated that the company could have prevented the cave-in that killed those workers. The report goes on to condemn the company for their failure to guarantee workers’ health and safety. This is another example of companies putting profits ahead of workers’ lives. The same mine was embroiled in a bitter dispute in 2011 over wages and conditions.
