Kazakhstan: Oil workers maintain strike despite repression

The strike by around 1,000 workers of the Kazmunaigas oil company has now entered its sixth month. Workers are camping out in the main square of Zhanaozen, a town in western Kazakstan, to press for their demands for better pay and conditions.

During this time, the workers have been beaten by police, fined and charged with numerous ‘criminal’ violations. Workers have been jailed. Last week two journalists covering the dispute were badly beaten up. For solidarity message, click here
