Internal problems drive Turkey's intervention in Syria and Iraq

This week’s military intervention by Turkey into northern Syria and northern Iraq has been explained as a response to the recent suicide bombing in Suruc. In actual fact, the current Turkish government headed by president Erdogan has been weakened by a slowing economy and loss of political support. The suicide bombing has given the Turkish state an opportunity to implement its long stated aim to defeat Kurdish forces both inside Turkey, and in Syria and Iraq. This expansion of the war will probably lead to more instability.
