London – After thirty years of attacks on social services, jobs, wages, conditions, health & safety, public health and education, the British government, the police and capitalist media reported surprise when young people started rioting in many cities, in response to yet another police killing.
British media took time off from reporting on the global financial crisis, on the uprisings in the Middle East and on the general strikes and mass demonstrations in Europe and globally, to inquire why young people were rioting, and why did they riot in Britain. A few commentators had some answers, but they were not listened to by the government, which decided to unleash police repression and further restrictions on civil liberties against whole communities to deal with this latest threat to their rule.
