Freeport workers defy police

Contrary to earlier declarations, the Indonesian police cancelled its plan to break the strike at Freeport Indonesia for the start of this month. The strike by workers will now continue at least until November 9th.

This is in stark contrast to what the police did on October 10, when they opened fire on a workers’ protest in Gorong-Gorong, Mimika that killed Petrus Amayiseba and injured 10 others. The police’s statement also contradicted the preparation that they had made to end the strike.

The All Indonesia Workers Union continues negotiating with Freeport Indonesia. Its main demand is a wage increase from US$7.5/h to $33/h for workers at level 1-3. Download solidarity leaflet here.
